School cuts could hurt, teachers say at protest

School districts may be spared massive cuts
School districts statewide may breathe a little easier after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger released a revision Wednesday to his January budget proposal to slash education funding.

Palo Alto officer assaulted, hit with bottle
Palo Alto Police Officer Alisa Doran was sitting in a parked patrol car at Mitchell Park about 11:50 a.m. today when she heard footsteps rapidly approaching, Detective Brian Philip said.

Superintendent: School math due for upgrade
Math teaching needs improvement, parents told Superintendent Kevin Skelly in a forum earlier this month on the school district's Strategic Plan, a map of priorities. "We need better, deeper, more challenging math curriculum," Skelly responded. "We've consistently heard that loud and clear about the elementary math."

Strategic Plan solidly praised by school board
An inclusive Strategic Plan for Palo Alto schools — whose goals include helping struggling students and top scorers alike — was praised by the Palo Alto Board of Education Tuesday.

Record-setting heat wave to last through Friday
An excessive heat watch is in effect today for most of the Bay Area and the National Weather Service is advising residents to prepare for record-setting temperatures that are expected for parts of the region through Friday.

Children's Theatre costume-sales probe ends
The costumes-sales aspect of the Children's Theatre financial-irregularities investigation will not result in any charges being filed against anyone, Police Chief Lynne Johnson confirmed Monday.

    SPORTS: Paly's Diepenbrock leaves for Caņada College basketball job
    Only a lucky few ever get the chance to coach a high school basketball team to a state championship. Peter Diepenbrock is one of those lucky ones. His 2005-06 Palo Alto boys' squad that went 32-1 and captured NorCal and CIF State Division II crowns was one for this prep history books. Diepenbrock, however, has closed that chapter in his coaching career and will begin a new one, as head coach of the Caņada College men's basketball team. Diepenbrock accepted an offer to coach the Colts last Friday.
