Bruce Hodge looks for elements of design when nurturing his interest
in photography.
"I'm really looking for design elements. Textures, colors,
composition. I try to make something new out of the source material
that's there," he said.
For
his award-winning "Seaweed on boulder, Point Arena,"
Bruce discovered design and abstraction in the seaweed covering
a boulder often submerged by the tides. A friend recommended Point
Arena, which is just south of Mendocino, as an excellent location
for a photo shoot. Bruce jumped at the opportunity, having photographed
in such lush areas as Hawaii and Costa Rica.
When he arrived at Point Arena, it was one of the lowest tides
of the year, presenting further photographic opportunities.
Bruce has enjoyed photography for years, having received his first
adjustable camera at the age of 12. His family was always very
supportive of his hobby.
"My parents would let me commandeer a bathroom and turn it
into a darkroom," he said.
Bruce moved out to Palo Alto from Georgia in 1979 to follow the
photographic routes of some of California's more well known artists,
such as Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Bruce enjoys photographing
nature more than anything.
"It's the biodiversity. You really don't get what that word
means until you see it," he said.
