The Gunn High girls' volleyball team just couldn't beat Homestead last season in SCVAL De Anza Division play. In fact, the Titans couldn't even win a game from the Mustangs while being swept twice. Gunn made sure it didn't happen again on Tuesday night. (Wednesday, 9:27 AM)
Menlo College Bell earns NAIA national weekly honor in football
Menlo College senior running back Payton Bell was named NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Bell had a breakout performance in the Oaks' season-opening 42-25 victory over highly-regarded Occidental. He finished with 202 total yards and scored three touchdowns.

Menlo School grads lead Princeton water polo into opener
Menlo School 2007 graduates Matt Hale and Mike Merlone -- both entering their senior season at Princeton -- have been named co-captains of the Tigers' men's water polo team. Merlone and Hale both come into this season after solid campaigns in 2009, which saw the Tigers finish third at the NCAA Championships. (Tuesday, 11:09 AM)
Stanford loses heartbreaker in field hockey
Seventh-ranked Michigan State scored with less than two minutes to play, giving the Spartans a 3-2 victory over host Stanford on Monday. The Cardinal (2-1) lost at home for the first time in two years.

Minnis earns first water polo victory as Harvard men's coach

It was a day of firsts in the pool for the Harvard men's water polo team at the MIT Invitational, as the Crimson got its first win, 12-8, over Cal Lutheran, and new coach Ted Minnis, formerly of Castilleja, earned his first collegiate coaching victory. The win on improves Harvard to 1-1 on the year. Harvard led for most of the game, leading 4-3 after the first period and 10-7 at halftime. (Monday, 10:30 AM)
Avery records a hat trick in Stanford polo win

Menlo School grad Alex Avery scored three goals as the Stanford men's water polo team downed Redlands, 23-5, at the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday. Jacob Smith led the Cardinal (2-0) with five goals while Ryan Brown added four. Brian Pingree and Hunter Ploch combined for 10 saves in the goal. (Sunday, 1:09 PM)
Luck has four TD passes in season-opening win
Andrew Luck threw a career-high four touchdown passes in helping Stanford win its first game without Heisman Trophy runnerup Toby Gerhart, beating Sacramento State by 52-17 Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Jeremy Stewart, Tyler Gaffney and Anthony Wilkerson each scored a touchdown for the Cardinal. They were among several running backs used by Stanford, which gained 213 yards, 82 in the first half, on the ground. (Tuesday, 8:43 AM)
