Palo Alto's 15-year-old Babe Ruth All- Stars beat a tough Hayward team, 5-0, to advance in the winners' bracket of the Northern California Regional Babe Ruth tournament on Sunday in Vallejo.
Clay Carey hit a bases-loaded double in the top of the 6th to break the 0-0 tie, bringing in two runs. Palo Alto scored twice more in that inning, and got another runner home in the seventh.
Luke Thomas pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings. Nick Wells came in to shut the door on a Hayward rally in the bottom of the fifth, then went on to wrap up the shutout. Justin Grey played stellar defense in right field, catching five tough fly balls that would have been doubles or triples against most defenses. Kyle Wallau caught the shutout.
As 13-year-olds and 14-year-olds, Palo Alto has faced Hayward in the State Tournament four times, and endured tough losses in every game. This win is sweet revenge. Palo Alto faces Woodland on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on Vallejo's Wilson Field. The winner goes on to the championship game on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m.
