(January 30, 2004) Tale of homeless Co-op Market clerk touches community
by Sue Dremann
Willie Branch, the homeless former Co-op Market clerk whose plight made the cover of the Palo Alto Weekly ("Down but Not Out," Jan. 14), has a lot of friends.
Palo Altans from all walks of life, from lawyers and psychologists to stay-at-home moms, have poured out their hearts after reading the story of how Branch had to live in his car after Co-op Market closed.
"The outpouring of support is unlike anything I've seen in my four years at the Weekly," said Amy Renalds, assistant to the publisher and Palo Alto native. The good news is that Branch has found a place to stay in Palo Alto, graciously offered by a Weekly reader.
The Weekly is sharing highlights of some of the many letters we have received. They are a tribute to the power of a community's action and voice.
